The Dubai Rugby Sevens, an Action Packed Event
The 38th Dubai Rugby Sevens was held from the 27th to the 29th of November 2008. Some of the teams that competed include the Arabian Gulf, Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, Portugal, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, United States of America, Wales and Zimbabwe. The 2008 Dubai Rugby Sevens was an important one since the Dubai Rugby Sevens tournament was moved to a newly built rugby sevens venue “The Sevens” rugby sevens stadium. Previously the Dubai Rugby Sevens was held at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Ground. The end to the Dubai Rugby Sevens 2008 was marked with a “Rugby Rock” concert with The Tom Jones Experience.
The Dubai Rugby Sevens started with a band of British expatriates in Dubai. They had acquired a tiny piece of land in Bur Dubai with assistance from the Dubai Municipal in the year 1966. The putting up of posts, marking the posts, levelling the ground, grading it, all of these were done by the founding members of the club. The club that was formed was called the Exiles Club. After numerous hurdles that the members had to go through, finally their dream became a reality. Some land was bestowed to the club by the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. And so the inaugural Dubai Rugby Sevens was kicked off in 1969.
The tournament has now turned into an action packed, mega event. With many add on features being hosted together with the Dubai Rugby Sevens. Three days of wonderful rugby, ended off with a Rugby Rock Concert. A stay in a Dubai hotel would be well worth.
