Rugby Team Calendar

How do we save our NPC?
Our NPC is under attack from O’Neill and Super Rugby. How do we save it. Is it a case of getting out of super rugby once and for all, or even using Super rugby as a tournament for the top 4 or 5 NPC teams only (ie they have to qualify like the European Cup). Or do we reduce the amount of games in either S14, NPC or both to shorten the rugby calendar rather than expand anything????????.
Regarding TV rights. If we had a diminshed NPC (6-8 teams) which I would like to see, and we had the top 4 of those qualifying for a shortened Super tournament (with Currie Cup top 4 and couple of Aussie teams) then I believe that would be just as attractive a proposition to the Television companies, and in fact may lead to NZ getting a bigger slice of the pie than they currently do.
Thats my theory anyway
We are danger of losing the game to commercialism. We need the NPC to remind us of how good the game really is. We need to make it more accessible to everyone. The Super Rugby has to be played at times that suit other markets such as the north where the money is and that is fine. By doing this we are having games played later and later. This automatically reduces the live audience. I don’t know about anyone else but when ever I have gone to a live match there are no kids. It has turned into a drinking fest. don’t get me wrong I like a drink but by the time the game is over there are alot more drunk people around than you would find at say an afternoon game.
Bring back the afternoon games for the NPC. Let the kids on the field at the end of the game. Let them see these guys on the tv are real. Make it a family event again. I note there were alot more people at the game in Auckland on the weekend.
