Is this a sign that rugby league is becoming more popular in NZ?

Just heard on the radio that the Warriors have so far sold more replica jerseys in 2009 than the five NZ Super 14 teams combined.

If this keeps up do you think league will overtake union to become NZ’s national sport?

Mate I think you’ll find that if the Warriors do well in this year’s comp (NRL 2009) the Kiwi/Warriors Fans will be right there to support them.

And, I reckon that this maybe their year.

I gotta say that before the Warriors entered the comp I have always supported the Broncos and the Raiders, “god forbid”, but being the outsider from my siblings who have supported the Warriors since their inception I have started supporting Warriors since 2007.

I ‘m now a big fan of the Warriors, and I reckon that “Pricey” is the number one man in the outfit, with the return of Stacy Jones, I just hope that the Warriors can maintain consistency this year.

Sorry I do not have a Warriors jersey yet, (but will get one soon), at the moment my best buy was 2 x NZ Kiwi RLWC 2008 Jersey’s (one for myself and my brother).

One thing I will say is that here in Wanganui, NZ all the latest Warriors Jerseys sold out at Rebel Sport’s like “hot cakes”, even all the NZ Kiwi RLWC 2008 Jerseys were all sold out.

I am proud to have the NZ Kiwi RLWC Jersey.

In terms of popularity I was listening to Leighton Smith’s talk back this morning (Monday 23.03.09) the amount of callers who phoned this morning saying how well the Warriors did against the Eagles spoke volumes, even some of the “die-hard Rugby Union followers” were complimentary about the Warriors. A trend I am noticing of late is the gradual drift of Union supporters towards League.

This is a sign of the times, and I think that the Rugby Union administrators have dug themselves a deep hole for which I think they will or may not be able to recover from. Unless there is a drastic change particularly here in NZ about the shape of Rugby Union and its direction it could well be consigned to the abyss.

The NZRU have of late been instrumental in orchestrating monumental disasters and I see no signs of this dissipating.

Rugby League is popular in NZ there is no doubt about that, but it will never gain the mantle of being the national sport, Rugby Union will always inherit that mantra and that will never change.
