Tri Nations
Any good reason why a Pacific Islander squad wouldn’t make a good addition to the Tri-Nations?
That is “Tri-Nations”. Not Super-14, for fan base reasons. A Pacific Islander squad toured Europe last autumn, so why not the Tri-Nations every year?
It is undoubtable that there is enough talent in the area to have a professional rugby franchise being run. However the pavific islanders unfortunately fall short in almost every other criteria.
They do not currently have a ground large enough to profitably host super 14 games at the moment.
The do not have the training facilities in place that would be expected of a professional rugby team.
The unfortunate situation for the pacific islanders is that there is no where near enough money in the economy for the public sector to build a 10,000+ capacity stadium, nor the private sector money to fill the ground every fortnight.
Nor are there enough sponsers willing to support a team located in an area low on commercial consumers.
It would take serious aid from Australia and New Zealand to help a team in this area grow, this will never happen though, because a) the two respective governments have better things to spend their money on than an overseas rugby team and b) neither countries rugby board would sponser a project that would effectively take away future talent from their shores as the team would lead to more top pacific island players representing their country of origin
My reasons are still relevant, the pacific islands cannot really host tri-nations matches. The other significant reason is that many pacific island stars that have not gone to Australia or New Zealand are playing in the European club competitions which are so often reluctant to release these players for international duty
