Rugby sevens at the Olympics?
I heard they are going to have Rugby at the Olympics Is this true?
It would be good for the Game Internationally, but would it work?
IF they are, What nations do you see rising in their game and play, and are showing great potential for future rugby?
From watching Sevens Ive noticed the Rugby play and growth in teams like USA and some African nations even europe to Asia have been outstanding! what dya say?
To answer your first question, rugby 7s is not definitely going to be in the Olympics, however it is currently competing with baseball, softball, karate, squash, golf and roller sports for a position at the 2016 Olympics. However there is the potential that 7s maybe a demonstration sport at the 2012 games.
If 7s was included in the 2016 games it would be an enormous boost for the sport. The investment and commitment from many nations would increase dramatically and media exposure that Olympic inclusion would boost the profile of the IRB 7s series. Funding would become available enabling many more teams to compete at the highest level. With regards to nations that would come onto the world stage if included in the Olympics. I think, firstly the African nations would grow at a faster rate than they currently are. Secondly the USA would become a world force due to the number of participants increasing and the government funding in the US would increase dramatically with Olympic inclusion. Additionally, in the long term China might become a significant 7s nations, because of their commitment to success at Olympic events.
Certainly the standard of play has been increasing year on year. This is owed to numerous factors one significant factor is the financial commitment of both rugby governing bodies and business (virgin Atlantic funds the Kenyan 7s team). A reliable source of funding enables teams to prepare and play in a more professional manor thus leading to a higher level of performance.
